Memory techniques for science, mathematics and the humanities

TutorASAP would like to advise you on some study methods that could help you retain information in key subjects.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) and British Baccalaureate (A-Levels) programmes can be challenging, but the rewards in both are great: with the former, students will have a broad, general academic knowledge, and with the latter, they will be able to specialise in particular fields. However, along the way, the complexity of study may lie in retaining a large amount of information in various disciplines. That’s why developing effective memorisation techniques is essential to achieve success in these educational stages, and at TutorASAP we want to help you! With this post we will introduce you to some study methods that facilitate the retention of knowledge in key subjects in fields such as science, mathematics and humanities.

First of all, however, we must make a key distinction that many of you will already know. On the one hand, the IB Diploma Programme is made up of core components such as Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), the Monograph and Theory of Knowledge, plus six subject groups: Language and Literature Studies, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Science, Mathematics and the Arts. On the other hand, the British Baccalaureate offers a wide range of subjects, including Mathematics, Business Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, History and Geography, among many others, allowing students to select according to their interests and goals.

Memorisation techniques for science

We begin our recommendations with science, a field in which subjects such as physics, chemistry or biology require the understanding and memorisation of complex concepts and specific terminology. In this sense, an effective technique is the creation of concept maps, which will allow you to better visualise the relationships between different ideas and facilitate the overall understanding of the subject. In addition, the practice of self-assessment through question and answer reinforces retention and helps to identify areas that need revision. Spaced repetition, which consists of reviewing information at increasing intervals, has also been shown to be effective in consolidating long-term memory.

Memorisation techniques for Mathematics

On the other hand, we have mathematics, which is considered the basis of all sciences. In this field, the understanding of formulas and procedures is fundamental. Therefore, we advise our students to use the reciprocal teaching method, which consists of explaining the concept to another person, which can reinforce comprehension and memory. Practising various mathematical problems over and over again also helps to apply the concepts in different contexts, strengthening retention. The use of mnemonics, such as acronyms or phrases that represent steps in a procedure, also helps to facilitate the memorisation of complex sequences.

Memorisation techniques for the humanities

We close our tips with humanities subjects, which often involve memorising dates, events and theories. Here you might want to apply the technique of storytelling, which involves creating stories around the information; this can make the data more meaningful and easier to remember. Another strategy you may find useful is to use flashcards to review terms and definitions. Also, relating new information to prior knowledge by drawing analogies can improve comprehension and retention.

Implementing these memorisation techniques adapted to each area of study can significantly improve information retention and academic performance. Of course, as we know, every student is unique, so another general recommendation we make is that everyone should experiment with different methods to identify which ones best suit their learning style. And, of course, you will always have the support of TutorASAP, our expert teachers, to answer any questions and help you with study techniques such as the ones we have mentioned.
