What mistakes waste time while studying?

We help our students identify and avoid the habits that slow down their academic progress

Studying doesn’t always mean making progress. At TutorASAP, we understand the challenges students face—after all, we’ve spent over 25 years helping learners in international programs like IB, IGCSE, and A-Levels reach their academic goals through planning, methodology, and focus. We know that time is one of the most valuable resources students have—especially in such demanding systems, where every assessment and deadline counts. That’s why learning how to study effectively is just as important as mastering the content.

Our support classes -whether individual, group, or online– focus not only on subject matter but also on teaching how to study better. In fact, many students fall into common traps that waste time without producing results. So, we’re here to help you identify those mistakes and offer practical solutions to make your study sessions truly productive.

Study habits that waste time (and how to avoid them)

  1. Studying without a plan 🡪 Starting a study session without knowing where to begin or what your goals are leads to distraction.

Solution: Break the material into manageable sections, use a planner or app to organize your schedule by days, and assign specific tasks with realistic time limits.

  1. Highlighting without understanding 🡪 Many students think highlighting equals studying, but without comprehension, it’s pointless.

Solution: First read to understand, then summarize in your own words, and finally highlight the key points to reinforce visual memory.

  1. Rereading without practice 🡪 Spending hours rereading notes can give a false sense of confidence but doesn’t guarantee retention or understanding.

Solution: Combine reading with active practice; ask questions, create outlines or mind maps, and most importantly, do exercises or mock exams (multiple choice or essay format).

  1. Multitasking or studying with distractions 🡪 Studying with your phone nearby, multiple tabs open, or responding to messages constantly disrupts focus.

Solution: Set up focused study sessions (e.g., 50 minutes + 10-minute break), and keep your phone in another room or on airplane mode.

  1. Leaving difficult topics for last 🡪 Postponing challenging topics creates anxiety and leaves you with little time to deal with them.

Solution: Start each session with the most difficult or important content. Your mind is fresher and more focused at the beginning.

  1. Passive studying 🡪 Just reading or listening isn’t enough to retain information, especially in analytical or technical subjects.

Solution: Engage actively—write, summarize, explain aloud, simulate exam conditions, or teach what you’re learning to someone else.

  1. Not resting properly 🡪 Studying without breaks, poor sleep, or no downtime reduces focus and memory retention.

Solution: Include short breaks every hour, maintain a consistent sleep routine, and take care of your diet and leisure time.

In demanding systems like the IB, IGCSE, or A-Levels, studying hard isn’t enough—you have to study smart. Avoiding time-wasting mistakes can be the difference between a stressful school year and a productive, rewarding academic experience. At TutorASAP, we teach our students not just to pass, but to optimize their efforts and work intelligently. We help you study in the most strategic way possible!
